Understanding the challenges
“ To create a better everyday life for the many people. ”
Finding people to help us
Greenpeace decided to tell the world about what we had done...
Following this success, we've worked with many organisations, including the Forestry Stewardship Council, Save the Children, Unicef and WWF.
By 1992, Russell, Kalle and the team had created the first environmental policy. They were encouraged to make a proper plan to deal with problems before they happened. IKEA's then CEO Anders Moberg, led the development and introduced a training programme for all co-workers.
We kept going, working with experts when problems came up. By 1995, IKEA had 114 stores, and we were sourcing from developing countries in Asia.
That spring, Swedish TV showed a disturbing documentary about child labour in carpet factories of Pakistan. IKEA was named as a customer.
It was at this time that Marianne Barner, who was running our carpets business got involved...
The problems continued. Marianne was travelling to suppliers across Thailand, Philippines and India dealing with companies who could not - or would not - cooperate on issues like working condtitions and pay.
We'd already developed a child-labour policy. Now we needed a serious code of conduct. Marianne was promoted to Director of Communications to oversee the development of this new approach.
By now Kalle had 50 colleagues in his environmental team, developing and implementing environmental improvements for our products, our suppliers and in our stores.
It was also about people. We had to find ways to protect future generations.
That's why we created
Launching the solution
Based on United Nations conventions,
sets out clearly what we expect from suppliers.
Launched in 2000, it describes what we expect on:
IWAY helps our suppliers to meet the
highest standards, whether we’re talking bookcases... or meatballs.
And it works. By 2014, nearly all of our partners were working to meet this level – helping us to build long-term trusting relationships.
The IWAY has had a profound impact on the way that we work with suppliers and will continue to do so.
The story continues...
